To avoid paying more than 2,000 Australian dollars (about 1200 euros) for a 45-minute ferry ride, two young men built a homemade barge with an external toilet, a 9-horsepower engine and a barbecue. It took them about four hours to reach Kangaroo Island but they passed the time by grilling sausages and ribs. And tested the toilet for its intended purpose.
The video of the bizarre feat (which dates back to May 2025) went viral after the protagonists published the video on social media. Despite the absence of a nautical license, the protagonists of the playful gesture managed to keep the vessel afloat by crossing the Backstairs Passage, not far from Adelaide, to land in the bay of Kangaroo Island called Christmas Cove.
The stretch of ocean that connects the Fleurieu peninsula to the Dudley peninsula can be dangerous and the two protagonists of the enterprise declared that they had waited for favorable conditions before attempting their mission: “Calm sea and light breeze”. A feat not to be attempted lightly.
