Lebanon, Tg3 crew attacked: this is how the driver died

A tragedy. What happened this morning in Sidon, in the South of Italy, cannot be defined in any other way Lebanonvictim of a bombing two days ago. The crew of Tg3 composed by the correspondent Lucia Goracciby the operator Marco Nicois and the translator Kinda Mahloufaccompanied by the driver Ahmad Akil Hamzehwas attacked and chased by a group of people. During the assault, the driver felt ill and collapsed to the ground. Despite the rush to hospital, there was nothing that could be done for him: every attempt at resuscitation was in vain, the man died.

There reconstruction of the drama took place during the 12pm edition of Tg3. “Kinda Mahlouf, our fixer had reported our presence to Hezbollah, we were filming without problems and people were talking to us. But a man appeared and went against Marco Nicois (the operator, ed.), trying to snatch the camera from him. We protected Marco and then returned to the car ready to leave quickly. Then others arrived and started pushing the car and the man tried to throw a large stone at us. There were those who held him back and there were those who incited him. We left quickly“, Goracci’s story: “But this man was following us. And when our driver stopped at a petrol station outside the village, the man came at us, snatched the keys from Ahmad, tried to break Marco’s camera by entering through the open windows while no one came to help us”

Solidarity and closeness to the Rai crew from all the main political parties and condolences to the victim’s family. Viale Mazzini’s condemnation of what happened in Sidon was clear: “In expressing condemnation and indignation for the attack on the Tg3 crew in Lebanon, the Rai expresses closeness and support to the family of Ahmad Akil Hamzeh, the driver who died of a heart attack during the attack, and confirms that he has implemented all safety measures for our journalist Lucia Goracci engaged with her crew in an extraordinary work of documentation of the ongoing war”.
