Luxury ATM

Enrico Cuccia turns in the tomb and if he could ask for image damage. Alberto Nagel’s laborists study the last bang: ask for a manleva and a good exit of one hundred million euros and finally, perhaps, a pact of non -competition. It is an act of surrender: the fortress is crumbling. Mediobanca, from Tempio del Silenzio, has become a luxury ATM. Sobriety is dead. The cynicism has survived, but only in the late season liquidation version.

One wonders who could have suggested to the AD of Mediobanca – who has always professed himself, at least in words, market man, making today slalom among the assemblies to dodge the comparisons with the shareholders – to take a via crucis against the government and the Minister of Economy, almost accusing them of “market manipulation”. As if in France or Great Britain, governments never allowed themselves to put their hand to bank chessors. But it is known that certain selective amnesia are a classic of the square.

For the grand finale, Nagel entrusted himself to the last ‘Japanese’ survivor of the Cuccia era: the notary Piergaetano Marchetti. Of the Lombard family, the reference point of the Milanese establishment was for decades. Together with Alberto Crespi, Alberto Mignoli and Guido Rossi, he was one of the four axes in the bouquet of the Cuccia who were fallen with surgical ruthlessness in their respective areas: civil, commercial and, above all, criminal. They are the protagonists of the infamous assaults on Ferruzzi and Ligresti, to name only two. Now there is only Marchetti, and with him the ambitious wife Ada Gigli, nicknamed “La Tsarina” in the days of RCS – when Mediobanca always had the bad idea of putting her husband in Rizzoli. The phrase attributed to Vincenzo Maranghi, the same cynicism of Nagel, but seasoned with a desecrating irony: “If” if I cross it on the street, first change, and then spit on the ground … “. Northern perfidias. And then they talk about the Romans and the Neapolitans!

Nagel had deluded himself to find the virtues of the other three axes in Marchetti, especially those of Guido Rossi and his well -known Fil Rouge with the Milan prosecutor at the time of Borrelli and Greco. But, even with all the possible imagination, in the “Mps vs Mediobanca” scheme, a crime is not found exactly. And it is curious as on the investments of the social security coffers – Enpam, Enasarco and others – in the banking system, now described by a certain press as the result of a conspiracy aimed at “nagelicide”, forget that it was precisely the Bank of Italy that warm them.

While Mediobanca Orchestra his media crusade against the MPS operation – on which the new shareholders will ask the old management, perhaps with an action of responsibility – the analysts already look further: they know that the core business will end up in new and expert hands, capable of attracting talents also from London, where the Italian Banker colony is the most numerous. Never before would have thought of returning to Italy under the armored governance of the Duo Nagel-Pagliaro.

For the replacement of Nagel, Mauro Micillo is in pole position: Casertano by birth, Brescia by adoption, blessed by King Carlo Messina. Former carabiniere, sailor, passionate about Ventotene, reserved, perhaps a little vindictive, but with elegance. He knows Mediobanca like his pockets. He is the only candidate really equipped to put Piazzetta Cuccia back on track. And he can count on the trust of the two architects of the climb: Franco Caltagirone, the visionary, and Francesco Milleri, probably at the last banking mission for Del Vecchio. Micillo knows that consumer credit walks alone. The real game will be to integrate Premier Mediobanca with Widiba. The first is larger and more prestigious but, with the same business (financial consultants in the area), the digital gem inherited from Marco Morelli holds head. The key will be to merge the strength of the Mediobanca brand – prestigious especially in the North – with the technological superiority of Widiba. If it works, it will be the wedding of the year.

Even the histrionic patron of Azimut, Pietro Giuliani, appears to the operation. In the meantime, A Piazzetta Cuccia the only operation in progress is Nagel’s exit strategy, who dreams of emulating his first chief, Gerardo Braggiotti, called ‘Bragiottino’ and opening a boutique of his own perhaps in London, where he would have already lived for some time. To do this – as Osvaldo De Paolini noticed – it strikes how the management of the Milanese institute (a hundred managers in all) has managed to accelerate a series of decisions with his own clear advantage, such as the immediate liquidation in cash, at the end of the MPS Opes, of the deferred share plan. As a secular temple of Italian capitalism, Mediobanca has become an end -empire outlet. And do you care? He continues to turn underground and find no peace.
