MacBook Neo: Apple's cheapest computer

After the presentation a few days ago, we analyze in detail the technical characteristics of the new Apple MacBook Neo. An entry level notebook, with a refined design, with a 13″ Liquid Retina display and high battery life. A product designed primarily for students, or for those looking for a laptop to carry out not too demanding activities such as web browsing, document creation and the use of multimedia content.

Below are the main features and prices of the new MacBook Neo.

Design

MacBook Neo boasts a sleek aluminum design that’s sturdy and lightweight. And since it weighs only 1.23 kg, it can easily be carried in your backpack or bag. It is also available in four colors: pastel pink, indigo, silver and citrus yellow. The same colors are also found in the Magic Keyboard, in lighter shades, and in the new backgrounds.

Display

On board we find an advanced 13″ Liquid Retina display with a resolution of 2,408×1,506, 500 nits of brightness, support for a billion colors and a useful anti-reflective treatment.

Processor

The processor is definitely not one of the strong points of the new MacBook Neo. Apple has chosen, in fact, the A18 Pro, the same CPU present inside the iPhone 16 Pro. According to Apple’s declarations, this chip offers all the power necessary for what most people do every day, such as surfing the web, creating documents, streaming content or retouching photos. Additionally, the integrated 16-core Neural Engine supports on-device Apple Intelligence features and everyday AI tasks, like summarizing notes or using the Cleanup tool in the Photos app. Processor not suitable for more demanding tasks such as video editing, 3D modeling, graphically demanding games or intensive multitasking due to the presence of only 8 GB of RAM.

Drums and keyboard

MacBook Neo offers up to 16 hours of battery life on a single charge. It has Apple’s Magic Keyboard, unfortunately not backlit, and a large Multi-Touch trackpad. Touch ID is also absent in the basic model.

Camera and audio

On board we also find the 1080p FaceTime HD camera and two microphones designed to reduce background noise and isolate the user’s voice. Let’s not forget the two side-firing speakers, with support for spatial audio and Dolby Atmos.

Connectivity

Another disappointing aspect of the MacBook Neo is connectivity. Apple’s new laptop only has two USB-C ports. Only the one on the left is of the USB 3 type and reaches 10 GB/s to be able to connect an external monitor, while the one on the right is a simple USB 2 at 480 MB/s. Thunderbolt protocol absent. There is no shortage of WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 6.

Prices and availability

The new MacBook Neo can already be pre-ordered. Deliveries will begin on Wednesday 11 March. MacBook Neo is on sale starting from €699 (€599 for the Education sector). Two memory variants available with 256 or 512 GB SSD.
