A new thousandth for the dosagezero reserve of Maso Martis, a family -run wine company on the East hill of Trento, in Martignano, at the foot of Monte Calisio. It is a significantly fine classic method, one of the first Pas Dosé produced in Trentino (it was released first in the 2009 vintage). A blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Nero, separatedly vinified the first in French oak barrique and the second in stainless steel and then assembled after 8 months and then “abandoned” to a stop on the yeasts of at least 36 months. Then the “pulling” without the addition of a sugary dosage that changes the profile.
A vertical and essential wine, which combines complexity with an extraordinary expressive freshness, from the body and intense, mineral perfumes, with a robust and decisive character. In the glass it exhibits a very bright light straw yellow and a fine and very persistent Perlage. The nose is of ripe white fruit, citrus peel, dried fruit, spices and pastry, in the vibrant and long mouth, with a nice sapid thorn. It lends itself to combinations with fish or crustacean dishes, with white meats, vegetable dishes, fresh or medium -aged cheeses. The price is 40 euros per bottle approximately.
Maso Martis was born in the summer of 1987 from the meeting of Antonio Stelzer and Roberta Jury during a holiday in Yugoslavia. A summer flirt that soon turns into a life and work story. In the 1980s, Antonio’s father, the entrepreneur Giuseppe Stelzer, had purchased 12 hectares between forest and vineyards at 450 meters above sea level, on limestone soil, rich in skeleton and with excellent exposure. The first plants, built between 1982 and 1986, included Chardonnay, Pinot Nero, Pinot Meunier and Moscato Rosa. The initial idea was to confer the grapes from the social cellar.
Antonio, then very young, closely follows the work in the fields. In 1990, with his girlfriend Roberta, he took the management of the farm in his hand and chooses to focus on the classic method, a direction then far from obvious in Trentino. The cellar is equipped with the bare minimum and in 1992 the first label was born: a Chardonnay Fermo. The following year the DOC Trento arrives, and with it the first sparkling wine, a brut. In the same year the eldest son Alessandra was born. For ten years, Maso Martis alternates sparkling wines and firm wines. Then the final choice: specialization on Trentodoc, keeping Chardonnay in the range Fermo, as a tribute to the origins. “The classic method is the wine we love, which for us better represents Trentino”, explain Antonio and Roberta.
The name of the company is a declaration of intent: Maso indicates the rural complex with attached vineyards, Martis is the Latin genitive of Mars and recalls the ancient name of the town, Martis Fanum – Temple of Mars. A name also chosen for its musicality, preferred to the surname of the family, of Austrian origins. Today Maso Martis is biological certified, produces only with owned grapes and is part of the Trentodoc Institute. From 2021 the generational passage has officially started: Alessandra and Maddalena, the daughters, guide the agricultural company, with Roberta and Antonio still active in the promotion and agronomic management respectively.
Among the
Future projects: renovation of the store, expansion of the tasting room and new systems at 800 meters above sea level. Thirty years after the first wine, the bet of those two boys continues, always out of passion.
