Younes Majidi will return to Italy. The six and a half year old boy, hospitalized in critical condition in Egypt after the accident that occurred on August 3 in a hotel swimming pool in Sharm el-Sheikh, will be transferred to Turin in the next few hours. This was announced by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani with a video published on X.

“In the next few hours the young Younes who had an accident in a swimming pool in Egypt during his holiday will also return and will be taken to hospital in Turin”, said the deputy prime minister. The transfer comes after weeks of hospitalization and after the doctors gave the green light to the possibility of transporting the child by plane.
The swimming pool accident in Sharm el-Sheikh: what happened
Younes lives with his family in Brandizzo, in the Turin area. Last August 3, the child fell into the hotel swimming pool and hit his head. The little boy was hospitalized in critical condition at the Pyramid International Hospital in Sharm el-Sheikh after going into cardiac arrest due to drowning.
In the following days he remained in intensive care, in very serious but stable conditions. On 30 August the Farnesina had communicated that, “following the further assessment carried out via magnetic resonance imaging, the attending physicians and the Italian doctors agreed on the air transportability of the child”. From that moment the final procedures to organize the medical repatriation had begun.
The Italian Embassy in Cairo and the Honorary Consul in Sharm el-Sheikh have been following the case since the day of the accident. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that the diplomatic representation worked to put the Egyptian structure, the Italian health workers, the Turin hospital and the foundation identified to organize the transport in contact, as well as the airport authorities.
Younes will be treated at the Regina Margherita in Turin
The Regina Margherita children’s hospital in Turin is waiting for the child. The availability to take charge had been communicated in recent days after contacts between the Piedmont Region, the Piedmontese health system and the Farnesina.
The Foreign Ministry explained that Tajani personally followed the case, keeping in contact with the Italian Embassy in Cairo and with the president of the Piedmont Region Alberto Cirio. The ASL To4, responsible for the area in which the family lives, took action to allow the little one to be taken care of at Regina Margherita.
Once he arrives in Turin, Younes will then be able to continue his treatment in a specialized pediatric facility. At the moment, the exact time of the flight, the time of arrival nor the operational methods of the transfer from the airport to the hospital have been publicly communicated.
The fundraiser to bring Younes home
In the meantime, the child’s story had caused a great mobilization. The family, who did not have insurance coverage to fully cover the costs of the medical transfer, had started an online fundraiser. As of August 29, over 2,500 donations had been made, for a sum exceeding 80 thousand euros. The mobilization started precisely to cover the costs necessary for treatment and to bring Younes back to Italy.
Subsequently the Farnesina also intervened. The Italian Embassy in Cairo announced that it will help cover part of the medical expenses incurred by the family in the Sharm el-Sheikh hospital and continued to provide logistical and administrative assistance.
