It is now official: Skype He will close his doors next Monday 5 May. It was Microsoft, the current owner of the instant messaging software and VoIP, who communicated the news to users through a string appeared at the top of the web version interface.
“You will receive a notification when you can move your chats and your content on Teams”we read in the notice, at the end of which the link “Discover more” is also present, which leads to a page in which further details and support for migration are provided. At least for the moment this information has been spread exclusively on “Skype Online”while nothing is still for those who use “skype desktop”: this could therefore mean that we will have to greet the web version of the famous program first.
Obviously the Redmond giant pushes its users to migrate to “Teams“, another Microsoft platform launched in 2017 that allows you to chat, share files and make calls and videoconferences. The company recommends migrating to this application by bringing with it the personal contents saved on Skype, such as contacts and chats, given that the transfer will take place completely automatically using the same Microsoft account.
However, there are some exceptions, as clearly indicated by the company on the support page:“Private conversations data will not be migrated”explains the site, while“Copilot and Bot contents will not be supported” in free teams, the free version of the app,“And no chat chronology will be available.”
It will still be possible to make conversations multi-platform between Skype and Teams until next May 5 also if the transfer has already been completed. In fact, the Redmond giant specifies that both applications can be used: “Ccesso a Teams Free does not block further access to Skype. During the transition period (from now until May 5, 2025), Skype data will remain accessible and you can use both apps based on needs”specifies the support page.
For the undecided there is even more time to choose where to move, without the risk of losing years of saved content: the Skype data, in fact, will remain available until January 2026even if there is still no indication of a specific date, after which they will be eliminated.
Not everyone is convinced of the passage to Teams, nonostand that is the most comfortable way to comfortably transfer all our information, for which alternative solutions are evaluated: the most popular are currently Google Meet, Google Chat, Zoom and Slack.
