New computer revolution, this time work by Microsoft, who announces a new quantum chip, called Majorana 1, the name is also cool, Ettore Majorana was one of our great physicists mysteriously disappeared in 1938 (Leonardo Sciascia dedicated a fascinating essay in 1975, The disappearance of Majorana). In this regard, two scientific articles came out, one on Nature and one on Arxiv.
A technology that will be able to eliminate quantum computers errors. Which, unlike normal computers, which use bits (i.e. values 0 and 1), use the quibits, which being particles can take 0, 1, other combinations, and also both values simultaneously (do you remember the Schoendiger cat? Is the famous overlapping principle).
Microsoft’s is a new type of qubit, able to eliminate errors that currently make quantum computers, topological quibits (no, mice have to do with it). Instead of the silicon, Microsoft used arseniuro of a stording led to very low temperatures and making it a new superconductor also in the sense of the state of matter: not solid, not liquid, not gaseous, but topological, capable of containing the so -called “Fermi of Majorana” leading electricity. The problem of interference and instability therefore seems potentially resolved.
The Microsoft chip will be smaller and more reliable than Willow, the quantum supercomputer of Google, who in any case managed in 5 minutes to perform a calculation that for a modern bit supercomputer would have requested 10 septilions of years, more than the age of the Universe (the answer would never have arrived, given that the sun has already incorporated the earth in a billion years).
In short, the road of computers capable of making calculations unthinkable in a very short time with Majorana 1 becomes increasingly practicable in the immediate future. As for the past, we do not yet know what happened to Ettore Majorana, and there is no calculation that can reveal it to you.
