Minister Kuleba Resigns: What's Happening in Ukraine

Something is moving in Ukraineday 924 of war with Russia could represent an important crossroads. The first news concerns the internal troubles of Kiev, with Volodymyr Zelensky expected protagonist of a maxi-government reshuffle. The confirmation came from David Arakhamiaa leading figure in the president’s party: “As promised, a major government reshuffle is planned for this week. More than 50% of the staff of the Ukrainian Council of Ministers will undergo changes. Tomorrow (today, ed.) is the day of dismissals and the day after tomorrow (Thursday, ed.) is the day of appointments.” But it is the names of the “losers” that are sparking the debate.

The government reshuffle also involved the Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, who resigned this morning. According to Ukrainska Pravda, the most likely replacement would be the first deputy foreign minister Andrei Sibiga. If the prime minister Denys Shmyhal will remain in his position, a different fate for other faces of the executive: yesterday the ministers of strategic industries announced their resignations, Alexander Kamishinof Justice, Denis Maliuskaof the Environment and Natural Resources, Ruslan Striletsand the director of the State Property Fund, Vitali Kova. And, again, the step back of the vice prime ministers has arrived Stefanishina’s eyes And Irina Vereschukthe first responsible for European integration, the second for refugees.

The internal debate in Ukraine is heated over the strategic moves of the leaders. For many, in fact, the offensive in Kursk risks proving fatal, considering Kiev’s weakness on other fronts. And it cannot be ruled out that the maxi-reshuffle is linked to differences of opinion. In particular, the resignation of Kuleba, who was rumoured to be fired yesterday, is surprising, having been on the front line since the beginning of the conflict. Yesterday was a particularly difficult day for Zelensky’s country: Putin’s forces launched ballistic missiles on the city of Poltavahitting several buildings including a school and a hospital. Dramatic toll: 51 dead and over 250 injured.

Poltava was a brutal massacre and the worst is feared: the toll could rise further in the next few hours. The local governor, Philipp Pronin, spoke of a “terrible” scenario, inviting the population to donate blood. According to the initial reconstruction provided by the authorities, the air raid alarm sounded, but the missiles struck almost simultaneously. The Ukrainian Armed Forces have confirmed that there are many soldiers among the victims of the Russian attack on Poltava. In a note, they say that there are “dozens of dead and hundreds of wounded: we have lost our brave Ukrainians, our brothers and brothers, the soldiers”. There is a lot of anger over the massacre, Zelensky did not mince his words when addressing the Kremlin: “Russian scum will surely pay“. The number one in Kiev took the opportunity to ask – again – for air defense systems and missiles: “Every day of delay means more lives lost”. But that’s not all. Attention also on the other fronts: Two people were killed, including an 8-year-old child, in the attack launched by Russian forces late on Monday evening against the city Ukraine from Zaporizhia.

Speaking of Kursk, Zelensky went straight ahead, saying that Ukraine’s goal is to hold the conquered territories “indefinitely”, to force Vladimir Putin at the negotiating table: “We don’t need their land and we don’t want to bring our way of life there,” he reports. The Press -, but we need it now.”
