In the past few hours, in fact, the patron of Spacex has announced, with a comment that appeared on his X profile, that he has activated the Starlink satellite internet service in Iran, despite the very hard censorship made by Tehran: “The Beams Are One”. Musk’s declaration came in response to a message released by the political commentator of Fox NewsMark Levin, who had urged him, promptly soliciting him to act: “This move will change the reality of Iranian citizens and will represent the final blow for the regime”.
In response to Israeli raids, Iran had in fact imposed temporary restrictions on the use of the Internet, with a reduction of about 50% of international connectivitywith the intent to hinder the dissemination of news relating to military activities of the Islamic Republic. To solve the problem of access to the network, Musk could now think about it, given that, at least from a technical point of view, the connection to low -altitude satellites of Starlink would be possible, as these would already cover the Iranian territory. In fact, some activists in exile would have reported that the terminals would be introduced clandestinely in Iran during the 2022 protests to support Internet access during the repressions made by the Ayatollah regime against the protesters. And this as regards the exquisitely technical aspects.
As far as legal issues concern, the fact that the fact that Starlinkas a US company, cannot legally operate in Iran without a specific authorization from the US government, from the moment in which the Islamic Republic is still subject to international sanctions, especially by Washington. To this must then be added the risks connected to the possible use of the Starlink terminals on Iranian soil, given that Tehran considers the use of unauthorized satellite systems as an espionage activities.
An eventuality, this, which however would not seem to worry even much Elon Musk, who now, thanks to the use of his satellites, It could definitively reduce the very dense blanket of censorship which hovers on the Islamic Republic.
