The new generation of foldable smartphones from Samsung is a reality: the Korean tech giant announced, live from London, the new Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8. There is also space for wearables with the new Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 and Galaxy Watch 9 smartwatches.
Samsung’s new foldable smartphones
The range of foldables comes in three variants. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 weighs 201 grams and has a 7.6-inch, square main screen and a 4,800 mAh battery. Z Fold 8 Ultra, the top model, is 4.1 mm thick when opened, weighs 215 grams, has an 8-inch screen, 5,000 mAh battery and 200 megapixel main camera with 8K video. And finally the Galaxy Z Flip 8, clamshell, weighs 180 grams and is 6.1 mm thick when open.
All new devices run Android 17 with One UI 9 interface and generative artificial intelligence functions, including tools developed with Gemini Intelligence. AI “is becoming an invisible structure in our lives – declared Tm Roh, president and CEO of the mobile division of the Korean giant -. Its value will be in helping more people achieve what they need. For this reason, Samsung has the goal of bringing artificial intelligence to 800 million devices by the end of the year”.
The real news is the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which follows the same nomenclature as its predecessor but changes in format, similar to the Pixel Fold and what should be the first foldable iPhone, expected within the year.
On the wearable front, however, Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 (with 47 mm titanium case) is aimed at outdoor athletes, while the Galaxy Watch 9 (40 and 44 mm, aluminum case) follows the lines and shapes of the Watch 8, with few innovations in design. Both introduce AI-powered health monitoring features, including sleep apnea detection and a heart health score.
