“The latest tests show a decrease in the quality of the water in the river following the rain episodes of the last two days, so the races scheduled for today are postponed to tomorrow…”. Maybe. The river is the Seine, the races are the Olympic paratriathlon ones, the note is the one released by the French organizers of the Paris Games. Nothing new under the sky. The refrain that had characterized the Games a few weeks ago is reopened and a piece of the theater of the absurd. But what happened in Paris with the triathlon and swimming and which is now happening in exactly the same way with the Paralympic races is not absurd, but much, much worse. The Seine is polluted and it has been known for years, months and weeks. During the Games, athletes were forbidden to dive and the races were postponed and somehow then held with some athletes who had been ill during and after due to poisoning and various infections. A paradoxical situation, the result of the presumption of an organizing committee that never bothered to think of a plan B, that never took it into consideration with the typical arrogance that fuels grandeur and the illusion of being able to control everything, including events, and that has led to considering everything as an annoying detail, especially the athletes, their dreams, their fears, their sacrifices, their lives. But it was obviously to no avail. A few weeks later, the situation is exactly the same. “The quality of the water does not correspond to the thresholds established by World Triathlon so the races are postponed to Monday. Paris 2024 and World Triathlon reiterate that their priority is the health of the athletes and, in these conditions, the Paratriathlon events cannot take place…”. There are eleven races that should take place in the waters of the Seine during the Paralympic Games and it should have started today with the paratriathlon which has now been rescheduled for tomorrow if the tests show an improvement in the quality of the water with the samples that will be taken tomorrow morning after 3.30. It seems like we are back to a month ago, same fears, same doubts, same stubbornness. Same presumption and same arrogance…
