Touch and go, the return of Carles Puigdemont in Spain It was like an action movie. Seven years after escaping from Catalonia after the illegal referendum and the unilateral declaration of independence, the independence leader returned to the country but immediately fled, disappearing without a trace, supported by thousands of people. The police were incredibly fooled, the arrest went up in smoke and the searches did not bring any kind of result, except for the vehement criticism of the citizens.
A simply embarrassing situation for the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan police force that arrested two agents for alleged complicity. Puigdemont had announced his return to Catalonia on Wednesday, with the aim of participating in the investiture session of Salvador Illathe new governor of the region also thanks to the votes of the independentists. What is certain is that the independentist leader appeared shortly before 9 in the morning in Barcelona, along the Passeig de Lluís Companys where Junts had organized a welcome demonstration.
In his brief speech, Puigdemont pointed the finger at the alleged persecution against independentistsbut also against the politicization of justice, claiming the validity of the aforementioned referendum. “We are still here”, Puigdemont’s cry to his supporters: “I don’t know how much time will pass before we see each other again, but whatever happens I hope we can shout again: long live free Catalonia!”. The independence leader then disappeared into thin air, in a game of speculation that set social networks ablaze.
And Sanchez? For the moment he has preferred silence, aware of the delicacy of his situation. Already dealing with the judicial scandal involving his wife, the socialist prime minister is aware that the evolution of the Puigdemonts case could push Junts to withdraw support for the governmentpushing the country towards new elections. The only message of the day was congratulations to Illa for becoming the new governor of Catalonia, testifying to the new relations between Madrid and Barcelona. But the criticisms did not cease, on the contrary. Vox and the Popular Party have roundly criticized Sanchez’s line. The leader of the PP Alberto Núñez Feijóo spoke of “an unbearable humiliation”, while Santiago Abascal went further, accusing the socialist prime minister of having guaranteed Puigdemont’s impunity. The climate is scorching, Madrid is trembling.
