Attention, in this period – and this is inevitable – is all for the iPhone Duo, Apple’s first and highly anticipated folding smartphone. An announcement that partially overshadows the big tech companies that have been involved in this situation for years foldable – above all Samsung, which launched the first Galaxy Z Fold in February 2019. It is precisely in order not to risk taking on the role of supporting actor, that the Korean giant has launched a veiled attack, but not too much, on those who from now on risk being its main competitor also on the foldable market.
“Galaxy Z Fold8 thinner and lighter than iPhone Duo”
Samsung particularly points the finger at the weight and dimensions of the new Apple devices: “One of the main engineering challenges of foldable devices is being able to offer the advantages of a larger screen without making the device heavy or impractical to use”, writes the company in a note, adding that a latest generation smartphone should feel natural to hold, easy to keep in your pocket and “perfectly integrated into everyday life”.
New iPhone Duo: foldable, innovative and very expensive
The reflection, initially general and extended to all the competition, then becomes specific, with precise reference to the newborn iPhone Duo, compared to the latest models made in Samsung. Galaxy Z Fold8 “weighs just 201 grams and measures only 4.5 mm thick when open”, underlines the giant, while Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra “reaches a thickness of just 4.1 mm when open”. And iPhone Duo? “In comparison, it is both heavier and thicker than the Galaxy Z Fold8: when opened it weighs 53 grams more and measures 5.2 mm thick, while when closed it reaches 11.3 mm”.
But for Koreans there is more than weight and size, because the Fold8 stands out for a perfectly symmetrical folded design, while the iPhone Duo “combines a flat edge on the hinge side with rounded corners on the opposite side”.
Between fears and pride in having paved the way for foldable smartphones several years ago, Samsung seems not to want to cede the scepter of the sector to Cupertino, even if this means exposing itself in an unusual way against its bitter rival: “Although it is rumored that the development of iPhone Duo required around a decade of work – thus concludes the press note – Samsung, on the occasion of the launch of the eighth generation of the Galaxy Z series, redesigned around 270 components and over 180 types of parts auxiliaries. This path of innovation has allowed the Galaxy Z range to make important steps forward in terms of displays, hinges, materials and internal architecture, further consolidating Samsung’s leadership in the foldable device segment.”
