Scams on social networks, Meta Revolution. What happens to Facebook and Instagram

Destination preparing to finally launch the technology of the facial recognition: Thanks to it, on Facebook and Instagram it will be possible to defend themselves from online scams based on the exploitation of the photos of famous people, the “Celeb Bait” and also be able to recover their account very quickly if it has been hacked.

The novelty had been anticipated last October 2024, when the first tests on the famous social networks began with the aim of solving these two long -standing security problems: in the next few days the option will also be made available in the countries of the European Union, in the United Kingdom and in South Korea, with great attention, given the potential problems of violation of privacy that could hide around the corner, to the stakes imposed by the regulatory entities.

As mentioned, there is a dual purpose behind this step forward of the goal. The first is to prevent the “Celeb Bait”i.e. that kind of social frauds that are based on the exploitation of the images of the celebrities: thanks to them, cybercriminals create ads that induce the victims to click on external links, in which the compilation of a form with sensitive data is then required or even sending sums of money. By making a comparison with the images on the social profiles of that particular famous person, Meta will be able to unmask these scams and proceed against the managers.

Another purpose of the new measure is to allow the thousands of users who no longer manage to access theirs profiledue to a violation or for having forgotten their credentials, to recover it in a very short time thanks to the sending of a simple selfie video.

In the next few days, the users of the famous social networks will have this new functionality available, who will be able to decide to activate or not, and will be informed in advance: facial recognition without consent is in fact a violation of the privacy laws in force in the EU, the United Kingdom and South Korea. The company has moved in time obtaining the green light from the local authorities, which allowed to start the tests.

“We carefully examined these measures through our rigorous process of revision of privacy and risks”, has ensured destination, “And we have created important measures of

Safety, such as the supply of information to explain to people how they work, making these measures optional and making sure to delete people’s facial data as soon as they are no longer necessary “.
