In other words, Elkann cheerfully doesn’t care about Parliament, settling yet another slap in the face to the Italiansespecially to Stellantis workers. The “availability for a frank and respectful dialogue” has been renewed, but Parliament does not go there: “Stellantis continues discussions with the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy as part of the discussion table set up at the ministry, awaiting the convocation official at the Presidency of the Council”. Bypassing Parliament is a serious act, but Gedi’s editor doesn’t seem to have too many problems. Some newspapers will come to his aid.
Like many other realities, Stellantis is grappling with one unprecedented sales crisis but instead of making mea culpa he pointed the finger at the government, guilty of not having provided other incentives for electric cars, which nobody is interested in but evidently neither Elkann nor Tavares noticed it. Furthermore, threats of closures and cuts, forgetting that we are not talking about numbers but about people, women and men with families. In all this context, Elkann slams the door in the face of Parliament, an icon of democracy and popular representation. Indifference or are there no strategies and plans to save the production sites in our country? Doubt is legitimate. Also because the State has supported the company for decades and not with little change.
Among the most critical of Elkann, Carlo Calenda he did not mince his words: “The fact that Elkann responded negatively to Parliament’s request for a hearing is a serious institutional disgrace. The answer ‘Tavares has already said everything’ is not acceptable. It wasn’t Tavares who sold Magneti Marelli promising to maintain jobs and factories, as it was. Elkann to accept employment and production commitments for Italy in exchange for a guarantee of 6.3 billion when he desperately needed it. We will remain the request but in the meantime we hope that Palazzo Chigi will finally summon him”
As recorded after Tavares’ hearing, the government and opposition are united with the unions, all looking for answers – concrete – from Stellantis. Hanging around is no longer allowed, not even for those like Elkann who believe they can do what they want without being accountable to anyone, starting with the workers.
