Telespazio-SpaceX agreement: what changes with the arrival of Starlink in Italy

The collaboration between Telespazio And SpaceX it became reality. The joint venture between Leonardo and Thales has announced that it has signed an agreement with the company founded by Elon Musk for the marketing of services Starlinkthe constellation of satellites conceived by the South African tycoon to provide broadband internet services throughout the world, especially in rural areas and poorly served by other networks.

This is great news“, commented Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in a post onHoping for ever greater collaboration, I take this opportunity to extend my congratulations to Elon Musk for having successfully concluded the Starship test”. The Italian company explained that, thanks to this agreement, it will be able to integrate Starlink into its global network hybrid connectivity, created with both satellite and terrestrial solutions. In this way, it will be able to guarantee “reliable and resilient communications services, fixed and mobile, with global coverage”.

Alessandro Caranci, head of Telespazio's “Satellite communications” business line, stated that he was “very satisfied with the agreement reached with Starlink“, thanks to which “Telespazio further strengthens its offering portfolio in the sector satcomthus fully responding to the specific needs of the institutional world and of strategic segments of the industrial world, such as energy and maritime”.

The agreement between the two companies represents an important chapter in the evolution of satellite communications. Projects of this kind, in fact, highlight the potential of space technologies and they promise to reshape the global telecommunications landscape by opening up new frontiers for access to the Internet and digital resources. These have now become fundamental components for the social and economic development of communities around the world, but innovation also opens up a series of questions regarding the role of private in space and to regulation of activities in orbit.

Soon, in fact, it will become crucial to establish a series of rules to guarantee the safety of orbital assets, prevent congestion of space and fairly manage access to the resources of this new theater of development.

In addition, it will also be necessary to discuss safety and sustainability, both for users and to establish responsibility for damage in the event of falling debris or collision between satellites. These are issues that are becoming increasingly urgent.
