That Unifil-Hezbollah non-aggression pact

The mission of the forces Unifil in Lebanon it turned out to be an epochal failure. No need to go around it too much. Activated for the fourth time in 2006 with resolution number 1701 of the United Nations Security Council, after previous interventions in 1978, 1982 and 2000, it was supposed to monitor the cessation of hostilities, guarantee humanitarian assistance to civilian populations and assist the armed forces Lebanese in the process of demilitarization of the portion of land between the Litani River and the Israeli border.

What has happened over the years in those territories is insteadand the exact opposite compared to the initial expectations of the United Nations: the militiamen of Hezbollah they have in fact militarily occupied the area by installing those weapons with which the ‘Party of God’ has repeatedly struck Northern Israel. The UN Security Council was aware of all this, as were the leaders Unifilbut no one ever bothered to lift a finger, at least until Israel opened Pandora’s box and exposed all the flaws in the mission.

How was this possible? Because the UN has never been involved in pursuing those objectives for which the intervention in question had been activated? Simple: there has long been a sort of non-aggression pact between Unifil And Hezbollah by virtue of which the UN forces left full freedom of movement to the terrorist group, obtaining in exchange a guarantee of safety for the soldiers of the mission. For the series: if Unifil does not hinder Hezbollah’s work, then the Islamic militiamen will not create problems for the UN military.

Science fiction? Absolutely not. In Lebanon it has worked like this for years. The first to talk about it way back in 2008 was the President Emeritus of the Republic Francesco Cossiga on the sidelines of an interview given to the Israeli newspaper Yedot Ahronoth, who, speaking of the so-called ‘Lodo Moro’ (the pact signed between the Italian intelligence services and the pro-Palestinian militias on the advice of Aldo Moro so that Italy could avoid the risk about suffering terrorist attacks), declared: “Today there is a similar agreement with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Unifil forces would be invited to move freely in southern Lebanon, without fearing for their safety, in exchange for a blind eye and the possibility of rearming given to Hezbollah.”

More: as we read in the newspaper columns The Trutha month before the interview in question Cossiga himself took care to file a parliamentary question addressed to the Minister of Defense of the newly installed government Berlusconithe current president of the Senate Ignazio La Russaasking verbatim: “We ask to know if you are aware of the fact that the Italian Unifil units in Lebanon, due to the instructions given by the previous government and carried out with a clear anti-Israeli spirit, facilitated the rearmament of the Hezbollah terrorist commandos from part of Iran and Syria”.

The ‘previous government’ to which Francesco Cossiga referred in his question was the centre-left one led by Roman Prodi. From then on, the agreement in question has always remained in force, effectively facilitating the rearmament of the Hezbollah militias and favoring the anti-Israeli Islamic alliance led by Tehran’s ayatollahs.
