If there is a truly negative effect of Trump’s political action, it is that he is justifying the European Union to organize itself more and more like a super state, accelerating a centralist drift that many citizens have never voted for.
This dynamic also ends up legitimizing weak leadership at the internal level, such as that of Macron, now lacking a solid consensus at home but suddenly strengthened by the international context.
Our concern is exactly the opposite of that of the liberal democrats, who in the face of every crisis call for “more Europe”, more integration, more power concentrated in Brussels. We see in this race for the super state not a solution, but an absolute danger.
The strengthening of the EU as a super state should concern us not in the abstract, but for what the Union has concretely demonstrated to be so far: a hypertrophic, opaque, inefficient, corrupt bureaucratic apparatus, captured by ideological and lobbying interests, in particular by eco-follies and green scams disguised as saving policies.
Where the liberal democrats see “more Europe”, we see less freedom. Where they talk about governance, we see irresponsibility. Where they call for centralization, we see citizens increasingly dispossessed of decision-making power.
More power in Brussels means crystallizing already evident errors, making them structural and irreversible, and further distancing decisions from people, businesses and real economies.
The answer is not “more Europe”, but less concentrated power, more competition between systems, more individual sovereignty, more limits to political power, more Freedom.
The European super state is not the barrier to the West’s problems: it is one of their main multipliers, and today Trump is used as a pretext to direct and centralize even more.
