The new green BTPs arrive (with 12 year maturity)

The Treasury Ministry is preparing to launch a new green BTP with a 12-year maturity on the market. The Mef announces that it has entrusted Barclays bank Ireland, Bnp Paribas, Deutsche bank, Intesa Sanpaolo, Jp Morgan and Société générale inv banking with the mandate for the issuance of BPTs whose maturity is scheduled for 30 October 2038.

What is a green BTP

This is a product that investors are already familiar with since its debut dates back to 2021. From the point of view of operation and characteristics, a green BTP is in every way similar to a classic BPT.

The difference lies instead in the use that the State makes of the money collected. The proceeds, in fact, the Mef recalls, “are intended to finance state budget initiatives, tax incentives and expenses, with environmentally sustainable consequences”. In short, it is an ideal treasury bond for those who want to protect their savings from inflation, but with an eye on the environment. The funds raised through the green BTPs issued in 2026, it should be remembered, are divided between all 6 categories contemplated in the reference framework: renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable transport, measures for climate and environmental resilience, protection of the environment, water and biodiversity, environmental research.
