Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore returned to the ground, the two astronauts who were stuck for nine months on the International Space Station for technical problems at the Starriner, the Boeing shuttle with which they arrived on the space station on June 6, 2024 after a decidedly adventurous journey.

Their return trip with the Spacex Cregon Freedom shuttle ended with the fool off the coast of Florida. With them also the commander Nick Hague of NASA and Aleksandr Gorbunov of the Russian Space Agency Roscosmos.
Williams and Wilmore had arrived on the ISS to stay a week and instead 286 days passed. In this period the two of the Starliner saw their shuttle to the ground alone due to the technical problems that would not have allowed a return in safety, collaborated in experiments and scientific activities and participated in many connections and conferences, especially for schools. Suni Williams was also in command of the ISS.

To allow the return of the two of the Starliner, NASA then had to review the EA programs, it decided to launch the Crew 9 mission with a crew of two astronauts instead of four, in order to leave two free places for the return journey of Williams and Wilmore.

The long adventure of Williams and Wilmore is memorable, but does not score a record. Currently the longest stay in orbit for an Astronaut of NASA is due to Frank Rubio with 371 days, followed by Mark Vande Hei with 355 days, Scott Kelly with the first year in orbit (340 days) and still Cristina Koch (328), Peggy Witson (289). The absolute record is held by the Cosmonauts Valeri Polyakov, with 437 days, followed by Sergey Avdeev (379), Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub (373).
Now the two astronauts will be subjected to a series of controls. The long stay on the International Space Station could leave consequences on their health, even in the long term.
