The United States will execute Nidal Malik Hasan in public and live streaming, Hegseth: "He will be shot, everyone must see"

After more than 80 years, the United States will host a military execution by firing squad. Even live streaming. This was announced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The person sentenced to death is Nidal Malik Hasan, a former army major who killed 13 soldiers inside the Fort Hood base in Texas on November 5, 2009.

Hegseth’s announcement

“He will have a firing squad by a platoon of soldiers. As it should be.” So Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told the conservative television station Real America’s Voice News speaking from the USS Abraham Lincoln. “We’re going to make sure that people can watch it. That it’s public. Because people need to understand that there are serious consequences for these types of things,” he added as he announced the livestream of the event.

Nidal Malik Hasan will be executed on December 3 at Fort Hood. The last US military execution occurred on April 13, 1961. In that case Private John Bennett was executed by hanging after he was convicted of raping an 11-year-old girl and attempting to kill her. Instead, you have to go back to 1945 to find the last US military execution by firing squad. Eddie Slovik was killed in France for desertion.

The Fort Hood massacre

In just ten minutes Nidal Malik Hasan killed 13 army soldiers and wounded 32. Hasan was still a major and army doctor when he went into action. A US citizen of Palestinian origin, Nidal became radicalized over time. Before the massacre he had also received a transfer order: the army was ready to deploy him abroad. But on November 5, 2009, Hasan entered a room on the Fort Hood base in Texas and opened fire with a semi-automatic pistol. According to some testimonies from the time, he also shouted “Allahu akbar (God is great, ed.)”.

The army major was arrested shortly thereafter. The court-martial trial began in August 2013. During the proceedings the former soldier admitted his guilt.

The UN high commissioner: “It’s torture”

For the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Washington’s choice is equivalent to a form of torture. “As the High Commissioner underlined in response to public executions in Afghanistan and Iran, public executions constitute a form of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment,” the UN High Commissioner’s office said in a message to Agence France-Press. “Live streaming an execution is equivalent to a public execution and would violate the absolute ban on torture,” he reiterated.
