To understand certain dynamics it is however necessary to look at the past and see how similar events have unfolded and been treated. In 1972the then Prime Minister Golda Meira representative of the left, refused to release terrorists in exchange for Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics, hostages of Black September. Yitzchak Rabinalways left-wing, to maintain the policy that terror is not a matter of negotiation, in 1976 not only refused to release terrorists with blood on their hands as requested by the hijackers of the Air France flight, but even launched the famous military operation on Entebbe. These are the two best-known examples, but situations with hostages in the hands of terrorists are full of the history of the Jewish State.
Nevertheless no one has ever taken to the streets or blamed the government for the deaths of hostages as is happening these days. Certainly the case of Gilad Shalit, for whose release over 1200 terrorists were released including Yahya Sinwarthe master of Hamas called “The Butcher of Khan Yunis”, has changed things and this change has certainly not favored Israeli deterrence, increasing the risk of attacks and armed clashes that are turning into open wars. Even if it is the terrorists who kill in cold blood, the last six hostages were killed with a shot to the back of the head, for the protesters the government and the prime minister in particular is to blame. Yet, according to many pollsa significant portion of the electorate, a figure that hovers around 45% of those eligible to vote, see Netanyahu as the only politician who can handle the current situation.
