Trenitalia and Alstom unveiled the new Intercity 200 on 22 September 2026 at the InnoTrans fair in Berlin, a train capable of reaching 200 km/h, designed to combine technological innovation, comfort and sustainability on medium and long-distance journeys.
The presentation was attended by Gianpiero Strisciuglio, CEO and general director of the FS group, Martin Sion, CEO of Alstom, Simone Gorini, general director of Trenitalia, and Michele Viale, managing director of Alstom Italia.
A sustainable train built in Italy
The train, designed by Alstom starting from the Coradia Stream regional train platform, is built in Italy with sustainable materials and is up to 94% recyclable, with a recoverability rate of 96%. Compared to previous models, it guarantees a reduction of up to 30% in energy consumption.
On board there are 403 seats, 3 stations for people with reduced mobility and 8 stations for bicycles with the possibility of charging for the electric versions. The completely renovated interiors offer seats made from recycled materials, an advanced air conditioning system, individual electrical sockets, spaces dedicated to families and automated refreshment points.
Digital technology for predictive maintenance
On a technological level, the train integrates digital systems developed by Alstom for the control and management of the train and for predictive maintenance. Thanks to continuous data analysis and real-time monitoring, these technologies make it possible to anticipate maintenance needs, reduce unscheduled interventions and optimize reliability and efficiency throughout the entire life cycle of the train.
500 million euros from the Pnrr for 38 new trains
The new Intercity 200 is part of an overall Trenitalia investment of around 500 million euros, financed through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, for the purchase of 38 new Intercity trains. The Pnrr funds, including the funds from the RepowerEu mission, have enabled a transformation which particularly affects the areas of Central-Southern Italy and non-electrified lines. The new trains will also be able to operate on lines with mixed traction or without electrification, with the aim of reducing the infrastructure gaps between the different areas of the country and promoting territorial equity across the entire national network.

Not only that. On the occasion of the German event, Alstom presented various technological innovations for railway mobility: the Coradia Continental Bemu battery-powered regional train (with 120 km of autonomy without catenary for the Chemnitz-Leipzig line), the frameless bogie (first chassis-less trolley in the world, designed to reduce weight and vibrations), and digital architecture Software Defined Train for predictive maintenance and continuous updating of on-board systems. These innovations are accompanied by the 12 new Avelia Stream trains in production for Italo.
