Trump accepts truce: "Stop attacks in Iran for two weeks". The conditions of the agreement

No attack, no “hell”, no “end of an entire civilization” as threatened. The American president, Donald Trump, has agreed to suspend bombings and attacks on Iran for two weeks, “on the condition that the Islamic Republic of Iran agrees to the complete, immediate and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz”, he explained on his social network Truth, stating that “it will be a bilateral ceasefire”.

Stop the attacks

Trump, after a day that kept the world in suspense with very serious threatsentrusted the turning point to a message on his social network Truth: “I agree to suspend the bombings and attacks against Iran for a period of two weeks.”

The US president therefore accepted the proposal that had been put forward by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The tycoon underlined that “the reason for this decision is that we have already achieved and exceeded all military objectives and we are well underway with a definitive agreement regarding long-term peace with Iran and peace in the Middle East. We have received a 10-point proposal from Iran and we believe that – Trump observed – it is a viable basis on which to negotiate”.

“If attacks against Iran cease, our powerful armed forces will stop their defensive operations,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on X, announcing that “for a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible through coordination with the Iranian armed forces and taking due account of technical limitations.”

The reactions

The ceasefire agreement with Iran is a “victory” for the United States, according to White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt: “It is a victory for the United States, made possible by President Trump and our formidable military,” she wrote on X.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has “welcomed” the two-week truce between the United States and Iran, while urging all parties to commit to lasting peace in the Middle East.

His spokesman Stephane Dujarric in a statement explained that Guterres “calls on all parties involved in the current conflict in the Middle East to respect their obligations under international law and to abide by the terms of the ceasefire, in order to pave the way towards lasting and comprehensive peace in the region”.

And Lebanon?

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the ceasefire also includes Lebanon. “I am pleased to announce that the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America, together with their allies, have agreed to an immediate ceasefire everywhere, including Lebanon and elsewhere, effective immediately,” Sharif wrote on X.

However, Israel says “no” to this. The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in the first official note on the US-Iran ceasefire, specifies that “Israel supports President Trump’s decision to suspend attacks against Iran for two weeks”, but with equal clarity specifies that “the two-week ceasefire does not include Lebanon”.

The next step

The first round of negotiations between the US and Iran is scheduled to start next Friday in Islamabad: among those present, there should be the US vice president JD Vance, as well as the special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, and the US president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

The first consequences

After the announcement of the truce, the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the American crude oil benchmark, collapsed by almost 18%.
