Unicomm Group: 7 million against food waste between donations and discounts

In 2025, the Unicomm Group donated food products worth around 3 million euros to associations involved in supporting the most vulnerable families and applied 50% discounts on products close to expiry for a total value of around 4 million euros. The announcement comes on the occasion of the International Day against Food Waste.

The donated products come from the company warehouses and concern goods close to their expiry date or with damaged packaging, which cannot be put on sale but remain perfectly edible and safe. Instead of being thrown away, it is redistributed to the community through third sector organisations.

The discount policy in the last hour

In the Emisfero, Mega, Famila and Emi stores, during the last hour of opening, all cooked products from the served counters and a selection of fresh or near-expiring products are offered with a 50% discount. “Better a big discount than a big waste”, is the philosophy that the company claims to apply every day.

The initiative is part of a broader picture photographed by the Waste Watcher International Report, created with the Distal of the University of Bologna as part of the Zero Waste campaign. According to the report, in 2026 each Italian citizen throws away on average 493.7 grams of food per week, equal to 25.74 kilos per year, 11% less than in 2025. Domestic waste alone is still worth around 6.6 billion euros every year. Fruit, bread and vegetables remain among the most wasted foods, and people with less economic resources experience higher than average levels of waste.
