Watch GT5, Huawei's Evolution in Smartwatches

The global smartwatch market is in a moment of change and in the second quarter of this year Huawei took the lead in global shipments with 8.9 million units, marking a growth of 42.1% compared to the same period of the previous year. Xiaomi follows in the ranking, with 5.9 million units (+17.1%), and Apple, which recorded a decline of 11.8%, with 5.7: significant numbers, although obviously this success for Huawei has been driven largely by the Chinese market, where the company has seen a great comeback. However, even in Europe, the Chinese brand is achieving positive results, and that is why today in Barcelona the Palau Siant Jordie was sold out for the launch of the Huawei Watch GT5.

The features

This is a significant evolution compared to previous models, with improved performance and a sophisticated design. The device offers a 40% increase in route tracking accuracy, making it an ideal option for those looking for precise monitoring of physical activities. Aesthetically, the GT5 is inspired by the GT4 model, but with a more elegant and refined touch and the return to the octagonal shape. It is compatible with both iOS and Android via app and also supports some of the most popular applications among athletes, such as Strava, Komoot and Runtastic. Among the new features, the integration with Petal Maps also stands out, which allows you to view a mini-map directly from the wrist during activities such as running and cycling, ensuring precise and intuitive navigation.

Another of the most interesting aspects of the Huawei Watch GT5 is the update to the HarmonyOS 5 operating system, which introduces new features designed to improve the user experience. These include the ability to respond to messages directly from the smartwatch via an integrated keyboard, which supports the main messaging apps, as well as manage calls, calendar appointments and more, all conveniently from the wrist. On the health front, the GT5 does not disappoint: thanks to the new Huawei TruSense technology, the device is able to monitor a wide range of vital parameters. These include heart rate, body temperature and stress levels, ensuring continuous and accurate monitoring of the user’s health.

Battery life is another strong point of the GT5: the 46mm version can last up to 14 days on a single charge, while the smaller 42mm and 41mm versions offer a battery life of around 7 days. Furthermore, the device is IP69K certified and water resistant up to a depth of 5 ATM, making it suitable for use in a wide range of conditions, both daily and sports.

How Huawei TruSense Works

The Huawei TruSense system is one of the most advanced on the market for health and wellness monitoring. Its main innovation lies in the use of a sensor that uses a glass-darkening technology, originally developed for satellite applications and night vision cameras. This system allows light to be shielded more effectively, improving the quality of detections and reducing interference, with a 20% increase in signal quality.

Another significant upgrade is the multi-space optical path architecture, which has seen an increase in blood oxygen monitoring channels from 4 to 12 compared to the previous generation. This increase allows for a wider range of signals to be captured, improving monitoring accuracy and providing users with more precise and detailed data.

The performance of the algorithms has also been optimized, including the AI-based heart rate monitoring algorithm and the new multi-channel fusion algorithm for blood oxygen detection. Thanks to these improvements, the Watch GT5 is able to provide more precise and timely detection of vital parameters, making it a valuable tool for both sports enthusiasts and those who want a technological watch suitable for more formal environments.
