“We're not going to say we're voting for Harris.” And Bezos immediately becomes Beelzebub

If you are part of the American media system and decide not to support the Kamala Harris’ candidacy for the White House you are mathematically a subversive, supporter of a homophobe, racist, fascist and so on. These are just some of the insults aimed online at Jeff Bezosowner of Amazon but also owner of Washington Postwhich yesterday, through CEO William Lewis, announced that it will not support any presidential candidate in this election. “We are returning to our origins,” added Lewis, recalling that in the past the newspaper had decided not to support either Democratic or Republican candidates.

Why was the finger immediately pointed at Bezos? Simple: the Washington Post itself confirmed in a post that it was the owner of make the decision yourself to cancel the endorsement that the newspaper’s editorial board was about to announce in favor of Kamala Harris’ candidacy for the White House. As confirmed by two sources, the Post reported that its editorial board had already drafted an endorsement for Harris that was supposed to be published before the election: The decision not to publish was made by the Post’s owner, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos , according to the same sources.”

Wise choice? Worried about possible retaliation if Trump wins? Tacticism considering the surveys that smile at the entrepreneur? Bezos will never go unbalanced. What is certain is that between the former president and Mr. Amazon there were tensions in the past. Amazon filed a lawsuit in 2019 claiming it was denied a $10 billion U.S. defense contract due to “increasing and overt pressure” from the then-president. The Defense Department later awarded the so-called Jedi contract to a competing bid from Microsoft.

Obviously Bezos’ choice sparked red hatred online. Many Democratic voters canceled their newspaper subscriptions, while others vomited insults towards the entrepreneur. But not only that. Today the Washington Post website published an editorial with the emblematic title: “The wrong choice at the worst time”. Very disappointed Kamala fans, in short. And again Robert Kagan, one of the most illustrious authors of the newspaper, announced his resignation.

Even the political analyst – and competitor on “Dancing with the Stars” – Alan Friedman attacked Bezos head-on with harsh epithets: “I’m sorry to say it, but I fear that Trump could really do it. And the fact that Jeff Bezos bowed to Trump makes the owner of Amazon almost worse than Elon Musk. While Musk is far right, Bezos is just a pathetic coward. Democracy dies in the dark”. It is unlikely that Bezos will ever become aware of this j’accuse, but it perfectly sums up the tone of the debate in comrades’ circles.

Bezos can breathe a sigh of relief. In fact, he will not be the only target of insults from Kamala’s supporters. In addition to the Washington Post, also the Los Angeles Times decided not to publish an endorsement of Harris. Even in this case there was no shortage of repercussions: Robert Greene, a Pulitzer Prize winner, and his colleague Karin Klein announced their resignations today, the day after the farewell to the newspaper of Mariel Garza, the head of the editorial page who had already written the draft in support of Harris blocked by owner Patrick Soon-Shiong. So Greene: “I understand that it is the owner’s decision. But in this case it is particularly painful because one of the candidates, Donald Trump, has demonstrated his hostility to the key principles of journalism: respect for the truth and for democracy.”
