According to British media reports, the victim is a 40-year-old man, Stephen Ogilvie, a public health service radiologist originally from Scotland and resident in the same public housing complex as Alodid. The 40-year-old suffered several injuries in the brutal attack and also lost an eye. The attacker, however, was arrested shortly afterwards.

Who is Hadi Alodid

Belfast resident Hadi Alodid appeared in court via video link, refused the assistance of a lawyer and did not respond to charges made against him through an Arabic interpreter. He was refused bail after a detective told Belfast Magistrates’ Court that there were fears his release would cause “serious public disorder” due to “strong public feeling” sparked by the incident.

“There are high risks – explained District Judge Stephen Keown -, unmanageable with any bail conditions”. His next court appearance is scheduled in four weeks, on July 8. According to the Irish Examiner newspaper, Alodid arrived in Northern Ireland in February 2023, after flying to Dublin from Paris. On arrival he applied for asylum and in September 2023 was granted leave to remain in the UK until 2028.
