When it comes to home internet connection, there are quite a few people who complain about experiencing line drops or sudden slowdowns: before arriving at the hypothesis that someone is exploiting our bandwidth to surf online, it is possible to follow a simple procedure that is often sufficient to solve the problem.
Experts suggest periodically scheduling and performing a reboot routerexplaining that the benefits of this practice can be appreciated immediately. Usually, if there are no problems of any kind, it is enough to refresh the electronic device once a month: it is a good habit to follow for preventative maintenance.
If, however, the user encounters connection problems, with an unstable signal or evident slowdowns, the suggestion is to reboot at least once a week. But what do you counteract by following this routine? A refresh allows you to eliminate temporary data from the device’s memory and free up resources: the router thus empties its cache and chooses the best Wi-Fi channel, avoiding interference as much as possible and ensuring an improvement in connection stability.
Another strong point of this system is the increase in security levels: some older devices, in fact, do not automatically update the firmware without a reboot, exposing the user to risks. Furthermore, by doing so, the IP address is updated and DNS problems can be resolved at the same time: the electronic device saves this information, which, however, over time, can become corrupted and cause problems in loading pages. Finally, restarting and unplugging the router for a few minutes also allows it to cool down, avoiding damage from overheating. A more frequent reboot is advisable especially if the device used for the connection is old and if multiple devices are connected to it.
To carry out the procedure correctly, you must first turn off the router using the power button or by disconnecting it from the power cable: it is better to avoid the reset button, since its only function is to restore the default options.
At this point you need to wait 30 to 60 seconds, but if possible it is a good idea to leave a few minutes of inactivity: once this phase is over, simply turn the device back on and check for any improvements compared to the starting situation.
