The appearance of a strange folder has aroused several perplexities after the last update of Windows 11. Immediately after installing the updates Returned on 8 April – i.e. KB505523 released for Windows 11 24h2, KB505528 for Windows 11 23h2/22h2 and KB505518 for Windows 10 22h2 – several users found the presence of one more element. It is an “Inetpub” folder present in the C:. The folder would find himself there without activation of IIS.
What is it about? There folder It is usually generated when installing the IIS, i.e. Internet Information ServicesMicrosoft’s web server. In this case, however, users did not install this function. Not only that. The folder does not seem linked to a visible active process. Yet it appears the same. Since the folder seems empty, many have canceled it. Someone even thought of a bug.
In reality, the folder has a logical explanation, and Microsoft invites you not to erase it. As can be read in the responses to the various FAQ, the US company said: “After installing the updates listed in the table Security updates For the operating system in use, a new %Systemdrive % inatpub folder will be created on the device. This folder should not be eliminated, regardless of that Internet Information Services (IIS) is active or not on the destination device. This behavior is part of the changes that increase protection and requires no intervention by IT and end users “.
In short, this extra element has a purpose. According to Microsoft, the folder is the product of numerous internal changes aimed at control and safety devices.
However, its use is not yet known. It therefore remains a great question about what the role is. Someone thinks that these are an intervention to remedy the CVE-2025-21204 fallen, a fragility that would allow hackers to access the devices.
