Zelensky plunges in the polls

In Ukrainegrowing skepticism about the president’s leadership Volodymyr Zelensky marks a period of political uncertainty for the nation, which finds itself in the midst of a prolonged conflict and a complex internal situation. Recent polling studies reveal an alarming trend towards declining trust in Zelenskyonce widely supported by the population, highlighting the challenges the president may face in maintaining his leadership position.

Zelensky’s popularity, once uncontested, now seems to be questioned even with respect to other figures of national importance. General Zaluzhny, for example, enjoys 94% trust, a comparison that casts further doubt on Zelensky’s leadership. Furthermore, distrust in the president has risen to 35%, indicating growing dissent among the population.

This erosion of trust appears linked to several factors: the removal of Zaluzhny, the persistent critical situation at the front, corruption scandals and a perception of wavering support from international allies. Anton Hrushetskyi, deputy director of Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, emphasizes that the decline in trust cannot be attributed to a single factor, but rather to a confluence of circumstances that have gradually eroded Zelensky’s popularity. He ranges from corruption scandals to the difficult situation at the front, without forgetting that the USA has not yet ensured the renewal of military aid.

The situation presents Zelensky and his government with significant challenges: managing growing political opposition, navigating through a still unresolved war and responding to domestic pressure for unpopular laws, such as the one on large-scale mobilization. The landscape of trust in various political and military leaders, as shown by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociologyvaries greatly, with some enjoying consistent support and others experiencing much lower levels of trust.
