7.4 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Mexico: tsunami warning lifted

A strong earthquake of magnitude 7.4 hit the southern coast of Mexico today, Friday 17 July. The Servicio seismologico nacional, the body of the National Autonomous University of Mexico that monitors seismic activity, located the epicenter 135 kilometers southwest of Ciudad Hidalgo, in the state of Chiapas, at a depth of ten kilometers. The quake was recorded at 8:48:38 local time.

Tsunami warning lifted

The earthquake was felt in several areas of southern Mexico, as well as in Guatemala and El Salvador. In Chiapas, emergency protocols have been activated and municipal civil protection structures have been deployed in the area to verify any consequences on buildings, roads and essential services.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reported that she had spoken with the governors of Chiapas and Tabasco, specifying that the two states did not report damage in the first budget. In the hours immediately following the quake, the Navy had recommended not approaching the beaches for six hours due to the possible risk of anomalous changes in sea level.

The earthquake swarm continued after the main event. In the 12 noon bulletin, the Servicio seismologico nacional reported that it had recorded 80 aftershocks, the strongest of which had a magnitude of 6.5. The checks by the Mexican authorities continued even in the absence of initial reports of victims or serious damage.
