The "I'll think about it later" tax: this is how Italians wasted 1.3 billion euros on bills and insurance

From 1 December 2026, just 24 hours will be enough to change electricity and gas operators, but the novelty risks clashing with the proverbial indecision of Italians. The data from the research commissioned by Facile.it to mUp Research speak clearly: from the moment we develop the idea of changing supplier to the moment we actually sign the new contract, 52 to 60 days pass on average, to which must be added the technical times necessary for the new supply to be active, which can reach up to another 60 days.

The cost of indecision

An indecision that translates into a very specific cost: by postponing the choice, in the last year Italians have wasted more than 660 million euros on electricity and gas bills alone, but if the analysis is extended to other domestic expenses such as car or motorbike liability insurance, in the last 12 months the “I’ll think about it later” strategy has cost consumers more than 1.3 billion euros.

Such long times, Facile.it informs in a note, are especially surprising in light of the fact that, as emerged from the survey, electricity and gas bills are perceived as the expenses that have the greatest impact on the family budget (by 62% and 53% of respondents respectively) and, consequently, as the first items that consumers would like to reduce.

“Underestimating choices”

“We often underestimate how much money we lose by continuing to postpone saving decisions that we can make safely and quickly. Today, technology offers the opportunity to quickly compare offers, receive specialized advice if necessary and sign the contract with the new supplier in a few minutes and in complete safety”, explain the experts at Facile.it.
