There were at least thirty victims of the train accident between two high-speed trains, which occurred around 8.54 am at km 118 of the Madrid-Seville high-speed line, between the town of Los Yebenes and Urda, in the province of Toledo. According to data communicated by Adif, the Spanish railway manager, 146 passengers and a newborn were traveling on the Iryo convoy involved, while the Renfe train, which hit it, was carrying 397 people.

The accident was apparently caused by human error. This morning, the safety system stopped working, causing around eight trains to stop in the area. Subsequently, according to initial estimates, an operator at the Atocha control center mistakenly ordered the Renfe train to continue despite the Iryo train obstructing the tracks.
