A Ukrainian for sabotage arrested in Rimini

Who is Serhii K. and what is accused of

The facts of sabotage on North Stream

Methods of the operation and technical details

The operation would have made use of a sailing yacht, which according to investigators was rented through a German company, using intermediaries and counterfeit documents. The boat, which started from Rostock, would have been used by the group to reach the area near Bornholm where explosives were placed. The explosions, in addition to causing important material damage and the breaking of North Stream 1, had repercussions on the energy supply in Western Europe, in particular in Germany.

Arrest in Italy and the next judicial passages

After the arrest in the province of Rimini, Serhii K. remains in custody pending that the extradition procedure to Germany be finalized. Once transferred, it will be conducted before the investigating judge of the Federal Court of German Justice, which will convene the preliminary hearing. The German Federal Prosecutor said: “The accused is strongly suspected of collectively caused an explosion with explosives, unconstitutional sabotage and destruction of buildings”.

International collaboration in investigations

The operation that led to the arrest of Serhii K. was possible thanks to the collaboration between the Italian law enforcement agencies, in particular the Carabinieri of Misano Adriatico, and the international police cooperation services. The North Stream case had already seen the presence of numerous countries in the investigative phase, given the economic and political relations involved and the international nature of the affected infrastructures. The close collaboration between Germany and Italy has been described as an essential for the identification and capture of the suspect.
