In Kenyafor once, people took to the streets not to support some coup but because of hunger. Spontaneous protest, in short, against the government’s attempt to increase taxes. That is, against the high cost of living of a life already expensive. Final: 23 dead killed by the police who shot at the demonstrators. And a hundred wounded.
Imagine if something like this had happened in Putin’s Moscow or Meloni’s Rome. But also in woke Washington and in any “white” city. Yes, because this is true racismnot the Hollywood kind: we don’t give a damn about Africans (but also Arabs, Indians or Chinese), except when they drown in international waters and the news continues to say that it happened “off the coast of Calabria”, because we are interested in the internal political battle and nothing else. We get emotional on command.
But, to return to Kenya, why is Africa always hungry? And/or eternally struggling with genocides and refugees? Since the 1960s, The West pours avalanches of money into “aid”which have made an entire continent a perpetual beggar. Where does this continuous flow of non-repayable money end up? Money that is periodically increased by that raked in at international “concerts” like Live Aid or For Africa, in which the cream of pop music performs, with tenors in tow. But Africans continue to prefer the risk of drowning in order to get out of there. In fact, here is the answer: the money ends up in the pockets of those in charge. Who, after buying the Rolls with the gold handles, transfers the rest to Western banks and/or to some mega-villa in Paris or London or some other financially interesting place.
I mean, the problem is corruption, and we’re not saying anything new. Even Obama had noticed this, having criticized African politicians in this sense when he was president and on an official visit. But, you might say, if the problem is the corruption of the ruling classes, why do the African people vote for them? Because, as has been pointed out, in Africa people vote not for an ideological party but for an ethnic one. The Zulu votes for the Zulu candidate, the Xhosa for the Xhosa candidate, and so on. Then, the ancient local tradition of who is given command and which can be summed up as “I am me and you don’t give a damn” takes over. Those who don’t agree can always leave by boat. In fact, if they leave, it’s better. Thus, the European (especially the Italian) shells out twice: one in “aid” and the other to support those who have landed.
In short, Africa’s problem is Africansand it is useless to beat around the bush or accuse me of being a racist. In fact, it is not me who says it, but, in the case of Kenya, the local bishops, who are very African. Corruption, therefore. And the hunger for power (it is the same thing) of many leaders and petty leaders, who are not concerned about the massacres they cause. Exhortations or theatrical gestures like Pope Francis kissing the feet of certain African leaders are of little use. Look at South Sudan: having obtained (bloody) independence, here they are slaughtering each other to decide who should command.
How do you solve it? I remember Montanelli, when the umpteenth LiveAid was going crazy. He said: “Give the money to Father Gheddo instead”. Who was the dean of the missionaries and knew his chickens well. Send missionaries – Christians – to Africa to educate people to think like Westerners. Thanks to Christianity and its missionaries, underdeveloped and barbaric Europe developed on its own in the Middle Ages. There is no other way.
