Aware of the consolidated, exquisitely Italian tradition of giving one’s support to those who need it least, a phenomenon which in the leap from fascism to communism saw as protagonists the best names of our intelligentsia, from Mario Alicata’s “A” to Cesare Zavattini’s “Z”, we were not too surprised when, the other day, we read about the long journey through anti-fascism undertaken by Roberto Quarta, former municipal councilor of Brindisi with Fratelli of Italy and that in the regional elections in Puglia he will support the centre-left candidate. He praised the twentieth century, he has a Mussolini father and a rottweiler named “Duce”; now he praises Antonio Decaro, he renames the dog “Emiliano” and has himself photographed wearing the Pro Pal t-shirt. From goose stepping to quail jumping.
«Mine is a convinced adhesion to a political project – he said -, but I don’t deny my roots». Adding a further ideological piece to that broad field that extends from Hamas to Nazi-Apuli, passing from «Power to the People» to Giuseppe Conte and from the Salis to Moni Ovadia.
The curious aspect of the matter, however, is that until Roberto Quarta was waving the tricolor flame he was just a wretched fascist; now that he confesses to having found support in the Left he is interviewed by Corriere and Repubblica as a
fine political analyst. Let us not despair of reading warm praise from Paolo Berizzi.
And all this demonstrates that if you want to remain proudly on the Right today the best place to be is on the Left.
