Aurora borealis in Italy, images from North to South: the sky becomes "pinker than ever"

Eyes rolling, it's a spectacle. Late yesterday evening, a new extraordinary episode of the Northern Lights was clearly visible in Italy. Numerous reports have been made to specialized sites, from north to south of our country. Many users have published amateur photos on social media, from Vigevano to Cortina d'Ampezzo, from Val Gardena to Altamura.

The aurora, called aurora borealis or australis depending on whether it occurs respectively in the northern or southern hemisphere of the Earth, is an optical phenomenon of the Earth's atmosphere. Even if the auroras are seen at night, they are actually caused by the Sun (here we explain technically what happened): the sun with the large sunspot AR 3664 released “all its energy”.

The Northern Lights form after solar particles interact with oxygen atoms trapped in the Earth's magnetic field. When solar activity is particularly intense, particles from the Sun can interact with molecular oxygen even higher up, between the 400 and 800 km. This generates the reddish color seen in many places in Italy.
