We could be at a decisive turning point in the Middle Eastern crisis caused by the horrendous massacre perpetrated by the terrorist action of Hamas. By collecting a proposal developed by Israel for a lasting peace, the American President Biden disclosed the terms in a press conference. In detail, the roadmap exposed to the world by the occupant of the White House includes three very distinct phases.
In this time Negotiations between Israel and Hamas will continue “to arrive – according to Biden – to phase two, which represents the permanent end of hostilities.” This step, which represents the crux of the negotiations, will also see the participation of the United States, Egypt and Qatar in the role of mediators. If an agreement is reached, the second phase will begin during which all Israeli hostages will be released (even the soldiers captured in these months of war), and the Tel Aviv army will withdraw from the Strip.
Now, there are many unknowns on the table, starting with the most intransigent wing of Israeli democracy, which according to the national security advisor Tzachi Hanegbi he reportedly told some relatives of the hostages that the government does not seem inclined to accept an agreement that provides for the release of all 125 hostages still in Hamas hands if it were conditional on the end of the war.
But, in my humble opinion, the main obstacle lies in that part of the Islamic world, which continues to support and finance Hamas, in which the specter of the external enemy continues to be used, in this case the Jewish state and, collaterally the entire West, as a still very effective means of keeping one's regime on its feet and with an iron fist. In this sense, an endless war against the “infidels” far from its territory seems to be particularly convenient for internal use within the same regimes. We'll see.
