What happens in the damask rooms of political palaces? What do deputies whisper to each other between coffees? In Rome there are no secrets, especially in La Buvette. A weekly podcast to tell all the behind the scenes politics. The agreements, the betrayals and the twists and turns of the leaders down to the smallest of parliamentarians, ready to do anything to avoid losing their privilege, their seat. The power. Everyone plays their own game, but not everyone manages to win it. Very few will be saved, especially after the seats were cut. Favorite game? Eliminate “the other”. Parliament is the new Squid Game.
Distant wars, but also close ones. Internal wars, like those at home. Wars made not by missiles and cannon shots, but by accusations, falsehoods. Of demonization towards the other, the adversary. Daniele Capezzone tells it well in his latest book published by Piemme entitled “West, us and them”. The editorial director of Libero, who we interviewed in this special episode of La Buvette, starts from a significant and divisive date: April 25th. Shouldn’t it be a celebration of national unity? You might be wondering, but no. It’s not! The reasons? Daniele tells us everything…

“Against surrender to dictators and Islamists, the subtitle is an outburst. Our West, our democracies are full of troubles, full of defects, they make us despair every day but we cannot throw the baby out with the bath water. It’s not that we can confuse a model like ours with horrendous dictatorships or regimes of Islamic fundamentalism. Those who are here and say that our West sucks, I ask myself: why don’t they take the first plane and move to Beijing, Tehran, Moscow, choose their favorite destination…”
Place readers at a crossroads: us and them… who are they?
“Look, they are not necessarily “those who speak a different language from ours or have a different passport from ours”, it’s a question of principles. For example: three days ago in Turin there was an atrocious news story between two Tunisian people. She wanted to live in the Western world and he atrociously stabbed her and killed her in front of their 12 and 13 year old children. He was Tunisian, she was Tunisian, but she was with us. He tragically with them, with the enemies of freedom. It’s not about “enemieing” another part of the world, it’s about “enemying” the enemies of freedom. Those who want to kill us!”
Your book is a sort of warning, a wake-up call. Do we have to wake up?
“Part of the enemy lies in our sleeping, in not wanting to see things. And also in not wanting to win anymore! I don’t see leaders who have the desire to make freedom win, to expand its horizons. I only see people coming from all over the world to apologize for sins that the West did not commit, to make us ashamed of our history, to be ashamed of who we are.”
Daniele, we give unsolicited advice to those who listen to us: how to survive and how to defend the West.
“First of all, answering a simple question: would I like to live in an authoritarian regime? I’m telling this to…”
