The situation on the battlefield smiles on Moscow. Tuesday’s attack in Ukraine caused 18 deaths and 130 injuries, but attention in recent hours has shifted to the crash of the Russian Ilyushin II-76 plane in the Belgorod region. The exchange of accusations between the two countries was immediate: according to the Kremlin, the aircraft was carrying 65 prisoners of war and 6 crew members. Kiev confirmed the crash, but denied the Russian version: “The plane was carrying missile systems.” Volodymyr Zelensky called for an international investigation: “It is obvious that the Russians play with the lives of Ukrainian prisoners, with the feelings of their relatives and with the emotions of our society.” Struggling with various critical issues and increasingly alone, the Ukrainian president has instructed his Foreign Minister to inform intended partners about the available data.
The reaction of the Kremlin was vehement, pointing the finger at Kiev for having voluntarily shot down the plane in order to “blame Russia”. According to the Russians, the people on board the aircraft were part of the blockade 192 prisoners chosen for the “equal” exchange. According to what was announced by the Duma, the Ilyushin was followed by another plane with about 80 other Ukrainian prisoners on board, which after the first plane was shot down, reversed course and returned. The exchange of accusations will continue in the next few days, with the only result of hindering the already complicated negotiations. The Moscow Foreign Ministry did not hesitate to define the Kiev government as an “unworthy partner” for possible negotiations, with the head of diplomacy Sergei Lavrov who immediately called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council.
