“Covid? Wuhan laboratory leak"

Donald Trump was right to define the Covid like China virus? It would seem so. It is not the opinion of a dangerous conspiracy theorist or of Beijing’s number one enemy, but of Hi. You understood correctly: American intelligence now favors the theory that Covid – a virus that has killed over 7 million people worldwide –
came from a Chinese laboratoryto be precise of the much chatter Wuhanfrom whose control he had accidentally escaped.

While keen to specify that this is not a definitive position, the CIA explained that this version is not based on new information but on a review of the elements already knownwhich reached its conclusion just as Trump returned to the White House. As we well know, the US president has always pointed the finger at China for having generated the pandemic, probably with the intention of damaging Washington. With less and less conviction as time passed, intelligence has always denied the laboratory-Wuhan hypothesis, preferring the theory of the virus developing in nature, in the Wuhan market or in some other outdoor context.

But now something has changed. And if the version about the Wuhan laboratory were to be confirmed, China could be accused of having purposely produced and released Covid with the aim of creating a global crisis. In addition to the obvious moral responsibility, Beijing could find itself having to reimburse the damage caused. Without forgetting the controversy linked to the funding that the US had given to the Wuhan laboratory. As highlighted by New York Timesin the last months of Joe Biden’s administration, national security advisor Sullivan gave instructions to carry out a comprehensive review of the secret information collected on Covid. And now the CIA has sided with theFBI and the energy department, who had already turned the spotlight on the Wuhan facility in the past.

John Ratcliffe, the new CIA director appointed by the tycoon, published the new results and underlined that intelligence could not stand by and watch in the middle of this dispute. The agency leans towards the theory of escape from the laboratory with “low confidence” at the moment, that is, with little confidence in having identified the definitive answer. Beijing’s line has not changed one iota from 2020 to today, but the investigations do not stop: the CIA has stated that it will continue to evaluate any new information that could change its assessment.

As anticipated, two years ago an Energy Department report concluded that the most likely source was a laboratory leak. The same year, then-FBI Director Christopher Wray said his agency also believed the virus “escaped.” From the WHO to the world’s greatest scientific authorities, several points of view have evolved over the years. Just think of what happened a year ago during Anthony Fauci’s closed-door testimony before the Commission on the coronavirus pandemic established by the US Congress. Regarding the origin of Covid, Fauci had explained that the hypothesis of the laboratory leak it wasn’t a conspiracy theory at allas was stated in the infamous “Proximal Origin” article published four years ago, the purpose of which was to delegitimize and defame that hypothesis.

Furthermore, a few weeks ago theWHO delivered a message to Beijing: “We continue to ask China to share data and provide access to it so we can understand the origins of Covid-19. It is a moral and scientific imperative, because without transparency and cooperation between countries the world will not be able to prepare for future epidemics and pandemics.” Xi Jinping’s country has never fully opened its doors to help the investigation into the origins of the pandemic, but has always denied any accusation. “Five years ago, China immediately shared information on the epidemic and the sequence of viral genes with the WHO and the international community. We have held nothing back and have made an enormous contribution to the fight against the pandemic” were the words of Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry.
