From 17 cents to 12.2, then half. The text of the law decree for economic support and the containment of the effects deriving from the continuing increase in the cost of fuel, just approved by the Council of Ministers, provides for a progressive reduction of the discount.
Extension and reduction
In detail, between 18 and 25 September the excise duty (and VAT) cut on diesel will be 12.2 cents, and no more than 17. Then, from 26 September to 5 October, a further drop is expected, or rather, a real halving, with the discount going to 6.1 cents.
How excise taxes change
The provision provides that from 18 September 2026 to 25 September 2026 the excise duty will be equal to 572.90 euros per thousand litres, and from 26 September to 5 October equal to 622.90 euros per thousand litres. The “standard” excise duty is equal to 672.90 euros per thousand litres.
“Ridiculous cut”
Massimiliano Dona, president of the National Consumers Union, is decidedly not satisfied with the measure: “It’s the last straw that the Government does nothing against the high bills, gives birth to the usual little mouse on fuel, with a ridiculous cut on diesel and the usual cosmic nothing on petrol and then abolishes the car tax up to 80 kW. A shame and a mockery.”
“For months – added Dona – they told the hoax that they had no money and with this excuse they did not intervene on petrol and raised the price of diesel above 2.3 euros per litre. Now, in complete contradiction, on the one hand they let motorists continue to be fleeced by the expensive fuel, according to the principle the more you travel the more you pay, the more you work with the car the more you pay, in full violation of art. 53 of the Constitution and the criterion of progressivity and capacity contributory, while on the other they abolish, even if partially, one of the few remaining property taxes. A crazy and logical economic policy. Who knows what the regions will think, given that they collect the stamp duty money”.
