Dominic Frimpong, a 20-year-old Ghanaian footballer from Berekum Chelsea, died after being shot during an armed attack on his team bus.
The ambush in Ghana
According to local media reports, the young footballer died due to the serious injuries he sustained. Frimpong was rushed to Bibiani hospital, where he died despite doctors’ attempts. Another Berekum Chelsea player was also injured in the attack, but his life is not in danger. The police have started investigations to trace the attackers.
The bus riddled with bullets
The attack took place yesterday evening, Sunday 12 April: some armed men targeted the bus, which was carrying around 30 players and managers, in the Ashanti region of southern Ghana, after a championship match against Samartex Fc. “While the driver was trying to reverse to escape six armed men, three of whom had shotguns – we read in the police reconstruction – they opened fire, riddling the bus with bullets”.
The note from the federation
In a statement, the Ghana Football Federation expressed “deep sorrow” over the player’s death and condemned “the tragic incident” which “has profoundly shaken the entire football community.” The federation called for “all necessary measures to ensure that justice is done” and announced its intention to “strengthen security measures for teams traveling for national competitions”.
