The ballot for the presidential elections took place in Romania, with a climate of great tension and high participation. The citizens chose between George Simion, leader of the Extreme right and Critic of EU and NATO, and Nicuōor Dan, the center of the centrist of Bucharest and convinced Europeanist. The seats, open from 7 in the morning, saw long files of voters across the country. The new president will guide Romania for the next five years, influencing not only internal policy, but also the position of the country in the European and international fields.
Record participation and growing turnout
Candidates and their positions
George Simion, 38, is the leader of the far -right party alliance for the Union of Romanians (Aur). He built his campaign on nationalist themes, criticizing the EU hard and opposing further military aid to Ukraine. Nicu master Dan, 55, is a mathematician and mayor of Bucharest, known for his battle against corruption. Dan has promised to keep Romania’s bond with the EU and NATO, underlining the importance of an alliance with Western partners.
Declarations of candidates
Both candidates voted in the morning and released statements after going to the polls. George Simion said: “We voted so that only Romanians, Romanians and Romania decide on our future”. Nicuō master Dan, for his part, said he wanted to guarantee the European orientation of the country and ensure good relations with international partners. He also invited all citizens to participate: “The future depends on everyone’s vote”.
A Romania divided and an unpredictable result
The latest polls describe a very close competition, with the two candidates almost paired. Simion, who in the first round had obtained 40.9% compared to 20.9% of Dan, gradually saw its advantage reduced. The Romanian diaspora, traditionally in favor of pro-European candidates, could prove to be decisive for the final result. Meanwhile, the first exit polls suggest that Nicuōor Dan could be ahead. According to a survey conducted during the day of the vote, 54.9% of the consents would go to Dan, against 45.1% Simion.
The international context
Romania, located on the eastern EU and NATO side, plays a crucial strategic role. The position of the new president will have a direct impact on the international relations of the country, in particular in a moment of tension in the region due to the war in Ukraine. The international community, especially the European Union, looks carefully at the outcome of these elections, which could influence the geopolitical direction of the country.
