Considering what usually happens with older versions of operating systems, iOS18 it will be distributed in beta to developers in June and will be officially released in September.
It is therefore well in advance that Mark Gurman of Bloomberg has stuck its nose in the new version of the Apple operating system.
Gurman is one of the most reliable voices, probably because he has connections inside Apple and, as a rule, gets few of the previews he offers the public wrong.
So, what can you expect from iOS 18 which is called the most important update ever? A lot Artificial intelligence (AI) and an openness towards other operating systems.
What to expect from iOS 18
Apple will focus on generative artificial intelligence, thus improving the capabilities of Sirithe virtual assistant integral to Apple’s operating systems.
Generative AI are those capable of understanding natural language and generating content consistent with the requests made to it. The most famous is ChatGPT but, it goes without saying, Apple will include it a technology pre-trained and optimized for iPhone users.
It is an obligatory step, because Google is very active on the generative AI front, also to the advantage of those who have a device with Android on board and, at the same time, Microsoft it is gaining ground thanks to Copilot, which in turn is particularly used by those who use personal computers and smartphones.
The use of a smart assistant that can be a valid aid in searching for information and answering specific questions is the path that the tech giants are following and Apple cannot be missed.
Opening signs
Another novelty, according to Gurman, is Apple’s adoption of the RCS standard useful for exchanging messages between different platforms. Thus ends the elitism of iMessagesApple’s proprietary system that facilitates the exchange of messages between iOS devices and which, in November last year, received a blow from Nothing Technology Limited, a consumer electronics manufacturer based in the United Kingdom.
RCS support will allow the exchange of messages between iPhone and Android devices, also including the ability to send and receive:
- text message
- audio messages
- high resolution photos and videos
- greater control over joining groups
- reading receipts
- better encryption.
Functions already mostly available to those who use iMessages (and therefore exchange messages with other iPhone devices) and which, with iOS 18, will also be made available to those who use Android.
A clear sign of opening which goes in the direction already taken by the most well-known messaging applications, including WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and others.
