From "smart" headphones to speakers with IA. The future of sound is already reality

Artificial intelligence: but which one? Because it is one thing to hear it to tell each technological appointment, a high is really understanding how algorithms can improve the use of products and be at the service of the consumer. In short, the answer comes from the presentation that took place in London of the new JBL audio range, a famous company specialized in the production of speakers and acoustic speakers that takes its name from its founder (James Bullough Lansing) and is owned by American Harman. Devices for all listening flavors (we will talk about it below) and which, in fact, shows how innovation can tend to improve technology, especially when there are to overcome obstacles that seem insurmountable.

IA and sound engineering

“In a company like ours, the research and development work is never finished,” explains Sharon Peng, Vice President Senior of Harman. In summary: the products are increasingly complicated and sophisticated, artificial intelligence allows you to arrive where the mechanics cannot do much: “Imagine one of our devices: our task is to improve electronics, mechanics, software, engineering and acoustic system. All this must work together and each of these functions represent a challenge “.

For this reason, in the last 10 years, the company’s head of the engineer says, the proportion has changed: “Once at 90% it intervened on the hardware and 10% on the software. Now everything is overturned: we have to put together codes that work with the device, a more mathematical approach to solve physical problems and make the audio better: once it would have been said that the speakers were not intelligent, today we can use artificial intelligence to rearrange and the physical space to make the sound even better. The goal, for example, is the vocal part, but the transducers move the air if they are of a certain size, and if the change do not work in the same way. So this physical limit can be overcome by intervening on the cancellation of the noise: the cry of a child, the sound of a train that passes, everything that can be deleted to give clarity to what is needed to be heard. And then there are other challenges: to work on frequencies, insert sustainable materials, the design. In short: so the IA also helps us for the next generations of product and we never get bored “.

The intelligent design

In short, the IA can be a healthy carrier of solutions even in fields where the result can be less visible. And this does not affect its usefulness, on the contrary, it strengthens it: “Artificial intelligence seems to have become a password for anything -says Carsten Olesen, Vice -President of the company based in Los Angeles -, but it is moving from Greenwashing to Aiwashing. It is not enough to say “we have it too”, it must be shown that it is used in the most useful way for the consumer. In my position, anyone who would say that our products are the best, but I can say I am I am proud because every device we have introduced has an incredible improvement. There is a lot of Harman philosophy in this “.

And then, therefore, increasingly crystalline audio (as the press releases always play, but in this case they are right), thanks to continuous research guided by increasingly smart solutions: “We have a record number of patents in a market that requires at least 3 or 4 competitors to grow and in which the challenge is continuous. There are three important things: speed, execution and innovation. Our organization was born with the speed in the head, we make quick decisions without waiting for approvals from the other. And then you must be resilient at this moment when the scenario changes every day: many companies have focused on the saving of costs by investing billions of dollars in factories in Mexico, what will they do now? We focused what customers want, focusing on affordable price, high performance and design “.

The design, in fact, one of the details that cannot be done without, “and our manager of the agency is an Italian: once there were vinyls, cassettes and black speakers with the maximum of the precious material like the root. Now, in the streaming era, we must think of color and fashionable “. And then, precisely Ia: “In these months we will see many products guided by smart features, but I have news to give you: in the second part of this year we will bring out a type of audio device never seen.
