A man opened fire in a supermarket in the Ukrainian capital and killed five people, before being eliminated by the police. The mayor of Kiev, Vitaly Klitschko, was the first to report it on Telegram. The shooting occurred in the Demyivka neighborhood. According to what has been reconstructed so far, the man barricaded himself inside the business, taking those present hostage and shooting with a legally possessed weapon.
The attempts of the police negotiators were useless, as they tried for 40 minutes to dissuade him from leaving the supermarket before launching the arrest operation in which he was killed.
Zelensky: “All the wounded are receiving the necessary care”
President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed condolences to the families of the victims, confirming that around ten people were injured, including a little girl. “They are currently hospitalized for injuries and trauma. All are receiving the necessary treatment”, says the Ukrainian leader.
“Four hostages were freed” from the supermarket where the gunman had barricaded himself, Zelensky added. “We expect a rapid investigation. Investigators of the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine are at work. I have instructed the Minister of the Interior and the Head of the National Police of Ukraine to make public all verified information relating to this case”, concludes the Ukrainian leader.
“The police negotiated for 40 minutes before giving the order to eliminate him”
“Kord special forces of the national police raided the shop where the attacker was, who took people hostage and shot police officers during arrest operations,” explained Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klymenko. “We tried to persuade him, knowing that there was probably an injured person inside. We even offered to bring tourniquets to stop the bleeding, but he did not respond,” the minister added. “Accordingly, the order was given to neutralize it.”
The man was reportedly in possession of a legally registered rifle. “In December 2025, he turned to the relevant authorities to have the weapon tested in view of the expiration of the permit. He provided a medical certificate and submitted an application to renew the permit for the weapon. That’s all we can say for now,” Klymenko said, adding that the investigation will determine which medical institution issued the certificate. Investigations into the reasons for the gesture are ongoing.
