Health and well-being, proof of Apple's innovations

If you type “people saved by Apple Watch” on the internet you can find a series of stories that could be yours. And it’s not just a matter of the heart, as at the beginning with the first sensors that detected possible imbalances. Today the range is wider, and with the arrival of the Watch Series 10 and iPhone 16 (in the case of our test the 16 Plus) the options relating to health and well-being are increasingly perfected. Apple, on the other hand, was the company that gave rise to the smartwatch phenomenon, and despite the presence today of competitors of undoubted value it still represents the point of reference for many users. So let’s see what the Watch 10 allows you to do combined with a new iPhone.

Design and size

Apple Watch 10 has moved closer to the Ultra model by enlarging its Oled display, which among other things has a brightness of up to 2000 nits and is therefore much more visible than the expected models. The dimensions are 46 and 42 millimeters and the thickness has been reduced to 9.7 millimetres, also to better help the sensors make measurements. In the case there are the digital crown, the side button and the microphone equipped with external noise isolation. Version 10 also allows you to use the double tap, i.e. the function that allows you to answer or play music when your hands are full, by joining the tips of the index finger and thumb twice.

Advanced cardiac monitoring

One of the areas where the Apple Watch 10 and iPhone 16 together excel is heart health. Thanks to increasingly sophisticated sensors, the Apple Watch is able to continuously monitor the heartbeat, detecting not only variations in frequency but also possible arrhythmias or atrial fibrillations, which are insidious because they cannot be perceived in any other way. The improved heart sensor in the Apple Watch 10 can more accurately detect irregularities, notifying the user and suggesting a more thorough check.

The built-in ECG app allows you to take an EKG directly from your wrist at any time. The collected data is synced to the iPhone 16 and stored in the Health app, where it can be analyzed and shared with doctors. This feature has been further enhanced with Watch 10, which now offers more detailed analysis of abnormal beats and greater accuracy in detecting episodes of prolonged atrial fibrillation.

Blood oxygen measurement

Another important feature is the measurement of oxygen in the blood: the smartwatch, with its new infrared sensors and green LEDs, manages to monitor the percentage of oxygen saturation in the blood in a non-invasive way. This is a crucial indicator of respiratory and cardiopulmonary health, and these measurements can be vital for people suffering from chronic conditions such as asthma or sleep apnea.

Blood oxygen data is sent to your iPhone, where it can be viewed in easy-to-interpret graphs. Users can set alert thresholds, so they are alerted if the oxygen level drops below a specific value.

Sleep monitoring

With its new devices Apple has improved sleep monitoring, becoming even more precise and complete. The Watch automatically detects when the user falls asleep and wakes up, tracking the duration of sleep and its various stages, such as light sleep, deep sleep and REM sleep. Integration with iPhone 16 allows you to view a complete analysis of your sleep cycles, providing personalized suggestions to improve the quality of your sleep.

One of the new features of this version is the ability to monitor breathing during sleep, detecting potential episodes of sleep apnea or irregularities in breathing frequency. This can be especially helpful for those who suffer from sleep disorders or those who simply want to optimize their overall health.

Fall detection and emergency calls

Fall detection was introduced a few years ago, but with Apple Watch 10 it has been further improved thanks to new sensors and advanced algorithms. If the watch detects a sudden fall, it will ask the user if he or she is okay. If no response is received, an emergency call automatically starts and location is shared with preset contacts.

This function, integrated with iPhone 16, can be particularly useful for elderly people or for those who practice high-risk sports. The synergy between the two products also allows you to quickly send emergency messages and keep track of calls made.

Tracking physical activity and fitness

The Apple Watch 10 is an effective tool for tracking physical activity. In addition to the classic pedometer and calorie burn monitoring functions, the watch is able to detect specific sports activities such as running, cycling, swimming and yoga. The automatic activity detection algorithm has been refined, better understanding when you start a physical activity and adapting the monitoring parameters accordingly. The Watch 10, like the Ultra 2, also includes features for those who love the sea, whether diving or snorkeling (thanks to the Oceanic+ app). Furthermore there is also tidal control.

Together with the iPhone 16, the user can view detailed reports of their performance, compare progress over time and receive personalized suggestions on how to improve. The Fitness+ app, integrated into the Apple ecosystem, also offers a wide range of workouts led by professional instructors, which are broadcast to your iPhone or Apple TV, with performance monitoring directly from your Apple Watch.

Mental health

One of the most significant innovations introduced with iPhone 16 and Apple Watch 10 is mental well-being monitoring. Thanks to the Mindfulness app, the Apple Watch encourages users to take time throughout the day for breathing and meditation exercises, reducing stress and improving emotional well-being.

The stress detection feature uses advanced sensors to analyze heart rate variability, a recognized indicator of this condition. When Apple Watch detects a significant increase in tension, it suggests breathing or meditation sessions. Integration with the iPhone 16 allows you to collect this data and view long-term trends, providing a complete picture of your psychophysical well-being.

Fertility monitoring and reproductive health

Apple has also introduced new features for reproductive health and fertility tracking, useful both for women who want to monitor their menstrual cycle and for those planning a pregnancy. The watch, thanks to its advanced body temperature sensors, is able to monitor basal changes, which can indicate ovulation.

The Health app on iPhone 16 integrates this information, allowing you to track your menstrual cycle, receive accurate predictions about your fertile days, and monitor symptoms. The information collected can be useful for doctors and specialists in the field of reproductive health.

Accessibility and personalized healthcare

Apple continues to improve its accessibility features to make sure everyone can benefit from health tracking technologies. In this case, new customization options have been added, such as improved haptic feedback, sign language support and integration with external medical devices, such as glucometers and oximeters.

Thanks to the HealthKit platform, data collected by the Apple Watch and iPhone can be used by third-party apps and medical facilities to offer personalized healthcare. Apple also ensures that all health-related data is protected by high security standards, giving the user full control over who can access that information.

Prices and materials

The combination of smartwatch and smartphone is therefore perfect for keeping one’s health under control and as devices that can intervene in case of danger.
